Art has long been a guiding force in my life, giving me the power of expression and the freedom that were not always available otherwise. Even when my skills as a landscape artist and portrait artist were not appreciated at a young age, my passion for art endured and become an important outlet in my life. I hope to pass this love for art and expression on to my students and nurture their own passions so they can take their talents to even greater heights.
I was born in Bakersfield, California on Dec. 1, 1940, and moved between California and New Mexico in my early childhood. After the war took its toll on my family and my mother divorced, art became very close to my heart. When my mother remarried a stern farmer, life at home become more difficult and, though my love of art and wish to make painting a career was not condoned, I could not give up the brush.
While I did not at the time pursue art as a career, I married the love of my life and my best friend, John Slikker Jr., and we raised a beautiful family together. He was supportive of my dreams and encouraged me to start a dress shop for the professional woman, which later developed into a television fashion feature. This helped me to further develop my creativity, and later I began to study with prominent local painters and grow my talents as a landscape artist.
Today my work has been featured in galleries, and I have had the pleasure of studying with numerous artists. I am continually honored to be able to teach a new generation of promising artists here in Pahrump and Las Vegas.
